Homemade White Sugar and Brown Sugar Substitute (THM-Inspired)

 

I’ve had many people asking me what I use for my sugar substitutes, so I decided to do a blog post simply about this. Our family hasn’t had any white or brown sugar in our house for many years. With five children, we think it’s rather impressive that none of them have ever had any cavities. (Our oldest is now nineteen) Yay! A heathy diet DOES make a difference!

 

I really enjoy being creative and coming up with delicious and “healthy” options that don’t weaken our immune systems and lower our resistance to the flu, cavities, or other diseases. I struggled with some low blood sugar issues when I was younger, and none of these sweeteners cause the roller coaster effect that other sweeteners do. I can now enjoy special treats without getting the dizziness or headaches that I get from regular sugar.

 

Truvia: (White sugar substitute)

8 cups Erythritol (or 6 cups erythritol and 2 cups xylitol)

4 level teaspoons Stevia extract — I use the THM brand

Mix together well and store in a dry, tight container.

For “powdered sugar,” simply blend this in a dry blender. Let the “dust” settle before opening the lid. Measure for recipes after powdering.

“Brown Sugar” Substitute: 

1 cup “Truvia”

1 teaspoon Molasses

splash of vanilla extract

Mix together with a fork until well incorporated. Store in a dry, tight container.

For “powdered brown sugar,” simply blend this in a dry blender. Let “dust” settle before opening the lid. Measure for recipes after powdering.

    My friend & I buy our xylitol from epicdental.com We purchase a 55# bag and split it. We also go to retailmenot.com and find a coupon code for a 25% discount (first time customers only). It ends up being about $3.15# with the discount.

    Sareena, it depends on how sweet you like it…when substituting in a recipe, I usually use a bit less of the Truvia and see if it is sweet enough.

    Was going to order some Erythritol & see it’s not listed on the xylitolusa.com site now. Is that normal to not always be available? Or should I be searching elsewhere to buy some? If yes, any recommendation(s) where to look next?

    Esther, they have always had it when I have went to order, so I do not know why they don’t have it in stock right now. But Honeyville.com does have it, (http://shop.honeyville.com/granular-erythritol-4lb.html) and Homesteadmarket.com also carries it. (http://www.homesteadmarket.com/Smart-Sweet-Erythritol-Granules) I have not personally purchased anything from Homestead market, but I have ordered from Honeyville multiple times, and I like their products.

    roughly how long does this last you? We have 4 kids and currently go through at least one Truvia container per week. When my teenager goes through a baking mood we blow thru 2 or more per week. So I’m wondering how much of a difference this will make for us to mix our own truvia. Just wondering if you know about how long the 5 pound bags of xylitol and erythrotol last you.     Hi, Amy! The amount we use really varies as well, depending how much baking we do. (Not to mention during the holiday season!)

    So, boy, I really don’t have any idea of how much we use a week. I don’t know how big of a container of Truvia you use now, but this recipe us used cup for cup of bought Truvia, so 5 lbs of this recipe should last the same as the bought Truvia. (Obviously you will go through the 5 lb bag of Erythritol faster than Xylitol because of the the ratios, so I would order more Erythritol than Xylitol)

    The main reason our family makes our own versus buying, is that I have found it to be more cost efficient. Hope this helps you!

    I dont see any amount of xylitol in your recipes here. Am i missing something?

    Hi Rebekah. You can use 2 cups of xylitol and 6 cups of erythritol in this recipe. Thanks! I updated it…Since some people are sensitive to xylitol, I like listing an xylitol free version as well. I explain more in my cookbook about which recipes don’t work as well when using xylitol.
