This Thing Called Love (By Alisha Mullett)

Our seventeen-year-old daughter, Alisha, was recently asked to be a contributing writer in a girl’s magazine. This article is one she wrote regarding God’s love. I thought she did an excellent job and decided to share it here. I believe it will be a blessing to you.

Love. So much controversy and misconception over this little word.

For some people, it is a me-centered, “I’ll-give-them-what-they-want-to-GET-what-I-want” philosophy. For others, it is a high-in-the-sky, fluffy and novelistic emotion. So, with the world crowding many different views of love in our mind, how can we understand and embrace God’s love? How can we comprehend the pure, clean love that our Father offers when the very meaning of “love” is cloudy and unsure?

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son…”

  • This love of God’s is unselfish.

The foundation of understanding God’s love is in this verse. It starts at the cross. God gave His only Son to die because He loves you and me so much. It’s always about giving rather than receiving.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a hope and a future.”

  • This love of God’s brings hope and peace; not condemnation.

I don’t know about you, but there are times when I don’t feel God’s love. Where is His love when bad things happen? Does God reject us at times? Does He not care?

Don’t ask me why, but when I lay in the grass on a cool summer’s night and gaze up to the heavens, I can feel God’s love near. It reminds me that, no matter the battles I face, God’s love, like the universe, is always constant.

Deuteronomy 31:8: “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you…”

Psalm 139:17-18:
“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God…Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand on the seashore.”

  • This love of God’s is forevermore.

I am convinced that God does not leave His children. Sometimes He works in ways that we do not understand, but He is always gently guiding us with His steadfast love.

If we look for signs of His love, we find it all around us. It can be in something as simple as a smile from a stranger on a bad day, a flower warming in the sunshine, or a song heard on the radio at just the perfect time. God uses tools to whisper “I love you, My child, let Me show you just how much.” He who created everything–from the vast galaxies to the ripple effect of the tiniest water droplet–this Creator God gave the ultimate sacrifice of love by sending His Son to die, not only for others…but for you! He wants you to know and see that He cares about you.

Very deeply.

And this love is the most powerful love you will ever know.

Amen little sister. I appreciate your depth of understanding at a young age. God promises wisdom to those who ask in the book of James and all with desire can apply there heart to know wisdom, so long as we ask in authentic faith.

P.s.- I really enjoyed the song you wrote and played with Briana on last years GEMS crusade about an open hand toward God. That ministered to my heart and I haven’t forgotten your family. I pull out the “Pain To Purpose” trifold that I still have sometimes and pray for yaw sometimes. Your family has touched my life and I look forward to seeing you all again in December, Lord willing. ?

Thank you, Chaplain Imsand. I praise God for using even me to encourage others and advance His kingdom. And thank you so much for your prayers! We do not take that for granted…there is power in prayer! May God bless you as you continue to serve Him there at Jackson.

    Blessings,
    Alisha
